Use of apostrophes s (‘s) in names.?
Hi according to my general knowledge, the use of (‘s) can be used when describing someone else possession. Ie. Max’s swimming pool.
But I recently came across some names which describe a person possession but (‘s) was not used.
These names speak of one’s possession:
Montfort College (Thailand)
Montfort Secondary School (Singapore)
Montfort Agricultural Secondary School (Tanzania)
David School
They are Montfort schools but why isn’t (‘s) added to the name Montfort?
Whereas other schools ie.
St. Gabriel’s Secondary School (Singapore)
Saint Gabriel’s College (Thailand)
St. David’s School
Noticibly, when there is a Saint in front of a name, there is a (‘s) added to it however I am totally clueless to the rational behind it.
Name of places are exceptions to the rule for the most part.
Montfort may be a name, but it may also just be the name of the school with no association to a person. In this case, as it’s not related, no apostrophe is needed. David School for example, could as easily be called Apple School; you would not add an apostrophe here either.
When there’s a saint prior to the school name, it’s making direct reference to a person (Gabriel for example), and as it’s associated with the school the apostrophe is used.
