Getting Out of a Mount- & Conditioninig Training- Grappling?
Hi guys; I would like to know what types of mount there are. What is the mount commonly found in “bundles” when the opponent is on your torso- disabling both your arms and legs as you cannot lify your arms (pinned down) or legs (quads disabled from moving). How do you get out of this as the person on top can throw punches down (this is a real fight situation- not sport grappling)
Is there an easy way to learn breakfalls and incorporate them into your system- I can breakfall on my own but when it comes to being taken down by the legs I tend to bend my arms and throw my shoulders back-landing on hands- DANGEROUS!
BTW- How do you learn Bear Crawls- when I do them my bum is really high- do I do them on my knees? The problem is that I can’t feel it in my chest when I’m on my knees.
Wow bunch of questions here. let’s see what I can do.
Types of mount: Generally they are all variations of the following.
Top Mount: This is what you described, except with some grapevining of the legs, I will get into this later.
Side Mount: Also called Side Control, essentially you are on top of your opponent and on his side outside of guard. This can be a head and arm position (kesa katame) or just a simple on your knees, up against your opponent and on top of him (yoko shiho katame).
Rear Mount: Usually this is hooks in on your opponent, riding his back. Variations include body triangling your opponent, breaking him down from a turtled position, riding his back while standing, and you being back down to the mat with him on top of you, but remaining in control of him via his back.
Escaping Top Mount: First off, I am having a hard time with what you are saying, it is pretty hard to grapevine the legs (which limits some movement of the legs), and pinning the arms, and still being able to rain down punches, unless somehow you have the arms captured under your body. First and foremost a person cannot grapevine your legs and be in a position to throw punches that matter, generally they have to sit up to do this. They can throw small shots, but not nearly as much as being in a good mount without the grapevining. Additionally grapevining the legs sets someone up to get countered easily, grapevining is usually an on and off type of position, just enough here and there to keep the opponent from being able to bridge effectively.
The key to escaping the mount is bridging, (oompa) or shrimping and getting to half guard, while pressing on your opponents knee. Generally for all things he has to do, there is a transition point. When he sits up, you bridge forcing him back down and giving you some distance. When he controls your arms, you bridge over your ear (over your shoulder) and he has to remove his arm to keep from getting turned over. You can always free yourself in one way or another by forcing him to post. A pop up with your hips usually gives you the room to work towards putting someone in half guard, (then in full guard). The key to keep a person from damaging you with punches while in the mount, is to not allow him to sit up. You hold him in tight, if you can tie up an arm, then you bridge over to that side (oompa) where he cannot post to get the reverse. If he escapes and sits up, your bridge hard straight back, which forces him down to post, again tie him up, do hip bumps while pressing on his knee and shrimping to get out.
Hope that helps, I can show it better than I can say it.
Easy way to learn breakfalls: Repetition, honestly, breakfalling on your own is great, but you need to practice it over and over from different positions. From a squatting position, straight back, to each side, etc. From a standing position, straight back, then to each side, front falls, rolls, etc. It takes a while for this to be ingrained, but repetition is what does it. Have someone do double and single legs on you on the crash mat, and work your breakfalls over and over. It is never easy, but with enough repetition you will get it. Having someone watch you and help tell you what you are doing wrong is also a big help.
Brear Crawls: The key to these is that yes, you are on your feet, not on your knees. But you have to bring your knees up and close to your body, sort of like squatting.
In fact, that is a good way to learn, squat down as far as you can go, then lean forward until you are on your hands, from there your butt will be high and your knees will be close to your body. Ensure you keep your core tight (abs, etc) and make sure your legs are going in a straight line.
