Math 6th Grade Help/confusion?
My daughter is in 6th grade and is confused
her assignment (test prep) was to find 2 strategies she learned to find the product of 4 1/5 x 5 1/3.
We know the answer in 22 2/5. She first converted them to improper fractions and multiplyed them across.
For the second way, she used the distrubitive property. (She HAS NOT learned decimals yet!)
But she got 20 1/15. Because she multiplyed 5×4 and 1/3×1/5 and got 20 1/15
How did she get 2 different answers?
∎ You are right! 22.4 is correct or 22 2/5
∎ My teachers always tell me don’t use mixed numbers ALWAYS convert it to improper
She got two different answers because it is impossible to multiply mixed numbers directly if the lcd(Least common denominator) is not the same.
You have to convert the mixed fractions into improper fractions, then multiply from there.
