Learning guitar?????????

I’m a beginner to GUITAR. And I have some question:
1. How long does it take to learn guitar?
2. Is learn music note or reading taps hard? How long does it take to learn it?
3. What’s the best way to improve guitar skills?
4. Is all music note for other instruments are the same?
5. What is the different between fingerstyle and other styles? Is fingerstyle difficult than others? If we can play others, can we play fingerstyle too?
6. How long have you played yourself?

1. Impossible to say: it depends on what musical knowledge you already have, your aptitude, how much you practice and, most importantly, what you want to be able to do: someone who claims to have been playing for 6 years reckons that knowing all the chords means you can play the guitar; someone else who has played for 25 years thinks that musical “notes” have to do with “tone” and has apparently never heard of “finger style!. I’ve been playing for over 30 years and at no stage did I feel I had “learnt” to play. Try Googling Doyle Dykes, Tommy Emmanuel and Jerry Donahue to see what you could aim for!

2. Guitar music is written on the treble clef using standard notation. You have to learn what the notes are on the paper and where they are on the guitar. Reading music for guitar is tricky in that the same note can be played in several places. I certainly can’t sight read but can read simple parts very slowly. I think that the skill to read music (even if it’s just as badly as I do) is essential. Do do it well, you need to do a lot of it and it becomes automatic. I don’t but it’s not that difficult.

Tablature (or tab) is a VERY poor second best – it is fine for learning music that you have already heard and have access to; it allows you to “see” how to play something but gives little real information about note values (the timing, how long a note lasts for). Also it gives no information about what notes are being played – what key it is in, what chords and harmonies might fit. Also, of course, only other guitarists can understand it. With tablature, there is nothing to “learn”: the six lines represent the strings and the numbers represent the frets. But it never became “automatic” to me – too much counting of frets for my liking!

3. Practice. Practice the things you can’t do (not the things you can).

4. Yes, all instruments play the same notes. The guitar is chromatic – it can play any note. Some instruments are limited in the notes and keys they can play.

5. With the guitar, normally, it’s what the left hand does that is difficult BUT playing finger style makes it hard for the right hand too. I would say that anyone who claims to be able to play the guitar should be able to play a little simple finger style. Watch the players I mentioned above to see how hard it can be. Really, solo guitar requires an ability to play finger style (there are some players who are exceptions).

6. I’ve been playing for about38 years. Self-taught, not good at anything in particular but can read music a little, can play plectrum and finger style, can play all basic chords etc.
