High School Team Football advice?
Hear me out on this. I made the mistake of not taking up JV and now I’m about to be a senior hoping to join the team. I’m hoping to learn team skills, and I figure football is the best sport for that.
My profile: I have loved football ever since I was a kid. I know the game like the back of my palm. Now I’m not fast but I can definitely catch up to you in 10-20 distances(basically zone defense). I’m not ripped but can bulk up because I got the “room for improvement”. My legs are the same, if I work them out, they’ll be ripped. My legs might be one of my strengths, along with vision. I weigh 185, 5’8″ tall.
I just want to keep myself busy, because this will most likely FORCE me to keep my grades up. I don’t care if I start or not, really, but its a plus of course.
I’m not sure what my position will be though, strong safety? guard? off. tackle? Do you think I should put in the effort? Any advice I could get will be helpful.
First let me say that you are going to be WAY behind. Second go for it. But a few things to correct that might help you. Obviously hit the weights but guess what? That is not the most important things, your attitude is the most important. I tell my players this, guys/kids on here, kids at camps. Football is 90 percent mental. So a statement like “I dont care if I start” will hurt you. Right now in your mind you should be saying I will bust my ass and be a starter and one of the best ones. One thing good with your statement is that when your bust your ass and still might not make it as a starter then you wont be as upset. Another thing you are not even close to knowing football like the back of your palm. I am a coach and guess what I know nothing. I spent most of the off season at clinics talking with other High School, College coaches and pro coaches. Coaches dont even know football like the back of thier palm, so get that out of your head right now. Other then that all I have to say is bust your ass starting today, prepare everyday starting today, watch as much football as you can every day starting today, talk with your coaches NOW and ask them what position’s could they use some more depth at and when they tell you then ask what can I do on my own to be ready. Now go bust someone in the chops.
“There is no better time than now. The time to live is now. The time to dream is now. The time to imagine and forget the past is now. The time to shine is now. The time to bleed, sweat, and determine yourself for the things you want most is now.”
