Is residency part of Medical School, or is it separate?

I’m interested in going to medical school after college (I’m transitioning to pre-med in the spring) and I was just wondering if:

A) You become a doctor before residency, and
B) If residency is required if you just want to work in a college after med school, or can you just do an internship?

Can anybody clear this up for me? I’ve looked online everywhere and read several medical school books and no one has touched upon this. Thanks ahead of time. =)
I’m not exactly sure what I want to do as a doctor. I’d really like to work at a college as a professor just teaching sciences. If you’re just teaching, do you still need to do residency for the same amount of time as doctors who want to actually practice medicine? I might change my mind after a while to actually practice medicine, but for now I’d rather teach it.

Sorry if I’m not making any sense.

Keep in mind that a residency is not required to practice medicine. Only a one-year internship after the MD/DO is necessary. This is the standard everywhere else in the world. US Medicine is far too specialized.
